I want to tell you a true story - one that actually brings me to tears every time I tell it. As hard as it may be to believe, I promise you this actually happened...
About 7 years ago, I was asked to photograph a particularly beautiful wedding. Of course I really love photographing weddings because of the beauty and love represented there and because it is always wonderfully emotional. Sometimes, it's the first time the entire family has been together in years. And, the couple is probably at their absolute happiest on this day.
The bride's name was Sarah, and she and her family were so wonderful. The wedding was perfect. The photographs turned out perfectly. Sarah even called me the day after she received her album to thank me for helping to make their wedding such a wonderful success, and for creating such cherished memories for her, and her family to keep forever.
Now, Fast-Forward Two And A Half Years... A Tragedy Happened, And Sarah's Life Was Completely Turned Upside Down.
Two and a half years of wedded bliss later, Sarah and her husband had a beautiful home in a nice part of New Orleans. They had decorated their home just the way they liked it. They had even adorned some of their tables and shelves with family heirlooms that had been handed down from parents and grandparents. Then, the worst tragedy imaginable happened...
....Hurricane Katrina Struck, And Began To Flood Their Home And Possessions.
Fortunately, Sarah And Chris Heeded The Flood Warnings On The News And Decided To Leave The Stricken City- But What Happened On The Way Out May Startle You.
Just imagine standing in your house, watching the flood waters rise, and knowing that you could only save a few precious items and that the rest of your possessions might very well be lost forever. I don't suppose any of us can really know what that feels like, unless we've actually been through it.
As Sarah and Chris desperately packed the few possessions that they could fit into their car, trying to get to safety, they had to make many heart wrenching decisions about what they could keep and what would be left behind. Sarah was looking at all of the wonderful memories she'd spent a lifetime lovingly collecting- and she knew she had time to save precious few of these items. She would only have the time to safely pack a few things as she and her husband quickly fled the flooding city.
Passing Family Heirlooms And Meaningful Trinkets Collected Over Lifetimes, What She Chose To Clutch To Her Heart And Rescue From The Flood Makes Me So Proud I Could Just Burst.
Frantically packing to escape the rapidly rising water, Sarah grabbed the album containing the wedding photographs I'd created of her and her family. Carefully wrapping her Wedding Album, and protecting it almost like a child, she ran from her now flooding home.
I found out about this myself later that day when Sarah called me from her cell phone as she and Chris were driving North to escape the devastating flood. In tears, she told me about the tragedy. Then, she told me about how she'd saved the wedding album I'd created for her as she fled from the flooding house. By the end of the conversation, both Sarah and I were in tears.
She Knew That I'd Kept The Negatives, And That I Could Make a New Album For Her, But THIS ALBUM Was So Important To Her, She Couldn't Bear The Thought Of It Being Destroyed.
That very story sums up the reason I became a photographer. Creating photographs that mean that much to people - I can't imagine anything that would make me feel more fulfilled as an artist.
Sarah Realized That The One Thing That Can Never Be Replaced - That We MUST Hold On To - Are The Memories We Share With Those We Love.
Life is so terribly short. But, at the same time, life is such a wonderful gift. And the memories we keep of these moments with our family will last forever.
